I have been buying Talbott wines since the early 90's (their first vintage was 1983), before anyone knew of this fabulous producer. After two visits and years of tasting their wines, I continue to believe that they are one of the greatest Chardonnay producers in America. Fabulous commitment to their vineyards leads to a balanced, well extracted wine with apple, peach and pear flavors mingled with sheer minerality and framed by unobtrusive oak. A ridiculous bargain at this price.
The Coleman family migrated North from California to pursue their longtime dream of farming grapes. Nothing new here when it comes to the history of winemakers. The difference, however, is that from the beginning they sought to do their wine right. Dry farmed and yielding only 2 tons per acre, their vineyard produces grapes that show the Oregon terroir precisely. Bing cherry and raspberry notes livened up by great acidity and just a touch of oak. And on the finish, a dusty earthiness with hints of incense that one finds usually only in Burgundy. Great complexity and depth at such an amazing price. Hail to independent family producers!
This is my 'let me show you something' selection. Merlot has been getting a bad rap since that Hollywood production (I liked the movie) extolled the virtues of Pinot Noir at its expense. This varietal makes some of the greatest red wines in the world in Bordeaux and several stateside wineries do it justice. The Alexander Valley in Sonoma always counterbalances Merlot's mellow nature with a good backbone of spice and minerality. Plummy notes with an earthy edge culminating in a creamy, chocolate tinged finish. This is Merlot done right and at a great price!
