this is a remarkable stateside competitor to some of the best italian pinot grigios - it’s bright and refreshing with spicy melon, citrus and almond flavors. a lively bite of acidity on a creamy finish makes this an especially great choice with grilled fish, but its extraordinary freshness makes it a superb companion to any lakeside meal
one of the most pleasant wines that we've tasted in a while, this napa pinot grigio has a wonderful brightness, with distinct touches of honeydew and pear and a discernible "grassiness" that is more often associated with sauvignon blanc. this is a very nice “food wine” that will keep your taste buds on their toes
this fume blanc's quintessential varietal character has made it a benchmark in california and a flagship at this popular winery. this vintage exhibits aromas of citrus, melon and lemongrass and, on the palate, vibrant flavors of lemon-lime and gooseberry with a nice mineral touch. the balanced, crisp acidity cleanses the palate and makes this an excellent companion to seafood and cheeses
we just discovered this incredible sauvignon blanc and were literally blown away – first by its brilliant hues of light yellow speared by vibrant streaks of green, and then by its aromas of exotic grapefruit and green lime. robust flavors of ruby grapefruit, kiwi and guava followed, with a stunningly crisp finish. this one is great not only with mild cheeses and fish, but is an absolute killer with our boldly flavored thai dishes
the coolest temperatures in a decade prevailed in the napa valley during the 2010 growing season, allowing for the production of some of the finest sauvignon blancs in years. from one of the consistently highest-rated producers in the region, this wine flawlessly captures the fruit and floral aromatics and focused, fresh acidity that underscore aromas of lemon curd, honeydew and allspice with a well-balanced palate and a lengthy finish. we’ve priced it well below market so it can be enjoyed by all discerning sauvignon blanc devotees
while the nose of this fantastic viognier hints at sweetness, with aromas of honeysuckle and white peach, it remains delightfully dry on the palate with notes of ripe apricot, lemon-lime, melon and lychee. with a signature characteristic of this vineyard, the lingering finish has a subtle touch of minerality. this wine is an incredible accompaniment to our tuna nachos at lunch and any of our asian-inspired dishes at dinner
this is a fresh and lively chardonnay that’s largely fruit-driven with just a trace of oak. it’s got great balance and plenty of clean, ripe citrus and tropical fruit flavor. it’s a very popular choice at the mingo because it’s terrific with asian-influenced dishes, but if you’ve tired of this one and are looking for something new, try raymond’s napa reserve for a delightful change of pace
this is a brilliant chardonnay with spicy pear, citrus and melon notes. it is very well balanced with a clean, fruity aftertaste that is truly delightful. at the price, this is some of the best napa chardonnay produced. we like to put our feet up with this one when the full moon rises
this delicately elegant wine is filled with subtle fruit and oak nuances to seduce the palate. aromas of fresh green and fuji apples lead seamlessly to an elegant palate framed by lively acidity and a hint of the french oak in which it was aged for five months. apple crispness lingers in the long, graceful finish. some of the best chardonnay that this exceptional vineyard has ever produced, it’s one of our runaway favorites
sam smith’s first boat, a 1936 lap stroke skiff built by the fabled master boat wrights of penn yan, new york, remains a venerated item in our boatyard collection, but today the bourgeoning vineyards dotting seneca lake are setting perhaps an even higher standard of perfection in penn yan, where red tail ridge soars at the head of the flock. this masterful blend of riesling and chardonnay provides a lush texture on the forward palate, with flavors of clover honey, orange oil, lime and quince, followed by a tantalizingly tart citrus finish. and the good karma doesn’t stop at the exceptional taste, as the vintners of red tail ridge donate a portion of the sales proceeds to foodlink, a regional food bank
after a 15-year marriage to our former alto adige pinot grigio, we’re on to something new and exciting! normally loyal to a fault, it took only one sip of this remarkably fresh, straw-colored beauty to throw our old favorite under the bus. with just a hint of intriguing tartness, this little number has a beautiful palate of lime, melon and apple flavors that are lightly balanced on exceptional acidity and exhibit an interesting complexity brought on by notes of herbs, hay and a finish with a touch of sea salt. all said, it instantly became our hot little trophy wine. palm beach antics at a pensacola price
savvy pinot grigio drinkers wanting to break away from the pack have recently uncovered the secret of albarino, the spanish seductress, with its fine aroma and intense flavor. the moderate climate of the rias baixas, with its atlantic breezes and well-drained soil, produces a dry but full-bodied wine with delicate peach, melon, grapefruit and zesty lemon flavors that provide an incredibly refreshing alternative to the same old same old. spain’s best-kept secret is out
the rocketing popularity of viognier in recent years is immediately understandable with just one sip of this rhone valley wine. it is at once set apart as a true classic of southern french winemaking by a wonderfully aromatic nose of intense aromas of acacia, yellow peaches and exotic fruits. it is tantalizingly weighty on the palate, underscoring its freshly balanced elegance, making it a great choice with seafood, shellfish and lighter meats
ambitious winemaking is behind this terrific and ever-popular burgundy. solid tones of toasted oak play first fiddle to the apple, pear, lemon and honey notes, but they still come in loud and clear in this low-acid vintage. we love it with stronger fish and white meats
a clean and focused wine, with a bright yellow-green color and the faintly exotic aromas of lime oil and spearmint. it is at once supple and juicy, with great structure and balance, a fine clarity and an intriguingly savory element on the finish. this is certainly not the chablis your mother used to drink! keep it out of the ice bucket and you’ll get an even deeper, richer taste
rieslings are back in vogue with a vengeance, and this brilliant new wine from the mosel valley may well beat all others in its range. it exhibits a lively acidity with ripe floral aromas and brilliantly vibrant fruit flavors tempered by the much sought-after hint of slate that make the mosel wines world famous. a remarkable treat at the price
grown in the fabled mosel valley, with its steep, sun-drenched slopes and mild climate, this absolutely exceptional riesling opens with a mild apricot and pineapple bouquet on a palate that is light-bodied, nicely balanced and pleasantly sweet. the flavor profile encompasses tasty tangerine, a touch of honey, apricot and bartlett pear. the finish is elegant and lingers nicely. this wine is perfect on its own, but is a stellar companion to any summer repast
this recent “discovery” is proof positive that someone certainly knows what they’re doing in the vineyards of south africa. this delicious sauvignon has tropical fruit overtones with subtle traces of green pepper. the ripe fruit aromas will dance on the palate, leaving a fresh and long-lasting finish. enjoy it before the rest of the world finds out and drives up the price
a complex, serious wine with outstanding depth, this kiwi white is rich, tactile and weightlessly full with intense citrus, mineral and spice flavors with a very long finish that hints at passion fruit and guava. a great wine with fish. a great wine without fish. a truly great wine
long heralded as the “winemaking wizard” of the rhone valley, jean-luc columbo has produced yet another world-class effort in this delicate rosé. with light hints of peaches, roses and palpable pepper, it is a subtle, round and elegant wine that is surprisingly complex, bringing in intriguing undertones of raspberries, cherries and black olives
a masterful blend of grenache, syrah and cinsault from two women who have arguably become the most successful female vintners in france, this light copper colored wine introduces itself with aromas of sun-ripened berries with flavors that are fresh and inviting. though lively with fruit throughout, it goes extremely dry and ends with a delightful tartness on the finish. a great choice for the cheese course
lyeth was one of the first meritage producers and their bordeaux-style blends are out of this world. this merlot exhibits a beautiful, bright garnet color with tastes of dense plum and dark-berry fruit. it’s time that america re-embraced merlot, and this would be a good place to start
this crystal clear, ruby-colored blend of merlot (82%) and cabernet franc (18%) marks yet another triumph for this dynamic long island vineyard. jammy aromas of strawberry, rhubarb, cherry and cranberry foreshadow lean, tart fruit flavors up front followed by tastes of juicy plum, red cherry and a faint trace of almond on the finish
an aristocratic wine from a fabulous vineyard, this reserve merlot smells fine and rich, with up-front blackcurrant aromas followed by more subtle tones of violet, chocolate and spice. like the essence of blackberry syrup, its tannins are soft, luxurious and complex
this exceptional pinot noir comes from vineyards located in the heart of the carneros appellation where wind and fog from the san pablo bay cool the vines and allow the grapes a longer growing season. with aromatic notes of black cherry and cranberry that rise subtly out of the glass and evolve into scents of rose hips and eucalyptus, this carneros pinot noir is a ripe, well-balanced representation of the noble pinot noir varietal
from one of our favorite vineyards, this wine with a soft and gentle style has a slight bite of tannin on the finish, but that doesn’t diminish the supple feel and nice layer of light cherry and cinnamon flavors that make it both charming and irresistible
it is hard to believe that there is a domestic wine that could truly compete with the jordan cabernet as our favorite, but we think this is the one. great color – deep, dark garnet with a clean, bright red band in the rim – is just the first clue to this bold, rich blend that’s jammed with flavor. the aromas of berry, cherry and a hint of new oak lead to a soft front that evolves immediately into a well-structured, tempered-fruit masterpiece, with a finish filled with ripe, soft tannins. when you are just as special as the jordan drinkers, but maybe just not quite so rich, this is the wine that may just level the playing field. 92 points in wine spectator
it’s not every day that you stumble upon a wine that is not only superb in taste and texture, but also happens to pair perfectly with some of our favorite dishes (all red meats, the mingo ribs and the shrimp and grits). this phenomenal vintage from an outstanding vineyard is deep ruby in color with aromas of dark fruits, clove and spice. notes of black cherry, cassis and raspberry are followed by nuances of bell pepper and cocoa. it is a wine that is lush and textured, with gripping tannins, well-developed acidity and a lingering finish
this rich and youthful wine starts off with a subtle mix of blackberry, blueberry and cherry tones, then eases seamlessly into a well-worn, toasted oak finish that follows you through your food. a deservedly popular wine from a fun and happening vineyard
this is undoubtedly one of the best values in california cabernet. with scents of black currant, vanilla and subtle oak and layers of blackberry and spice on the palate, it is extremely well balanced with fresh acidity and soft but clearly discernable tannins. a great effort at an unbeatable price and one of our very favorites on the list
this is an elegant and highly polished wine with a medium body that superbly supports flavors of ripe cherry, currant, herbs and spices. a finish of polished tannins gives it a lasting luster. you will never be disappointed. this is the one we drink when someone at the table is feeling particularly special - or rich - or both
this incredibly well-balanced and food-friendly wine has been consistently impressive over the past few vintages and has earned its many accolades. aromas of briar fruit, dried herbs and sweet oak underscore fresh raspberry and cherry flavors together with savory oak spice. medium bodied with moderate acidity, round tannins, and a lively finish
anger, gluttony, sloth, envy, lust, greed, pride. we'll take two of each, with a bottle of this phenomenal, if sinfully named, old vine zinfandel which is artfully blended from the contributions of seven of lodi's most respected growers. let yourself be led astray - you certainly won't be bored
once in a great while you come across a wine that’s been overlooked, and this is one of the best we’ve found. some of its trendier relatives sell for several hundred dollars a bottle, but this is what’s on the tables of bordeaux. it is wonderfully smooth and silky, yet maintains a robust body, opens up like an old book and is as elegantly sophisticated as the venerated name it bears
this 2008 chianti classico reserva is so impressive that it earned a 92-point rating from wine advocate. and a true classic it is, with everything one could ask for in a traditional chianti in length, focus and balance. displaying sensuously understated notes of dark cherries, plums, spices, menthol, cedar and tobacco, this is a wine that transports you to the very essence of italy
this is an excellent example of the world-famous brunellos, with great body intensity, complex and developed aromas with a bright spine of acidity and round, dusty tannins, all leading up to a long, luxurious finish. in this fine wine, everything is extraordinary but nothing is excessive. priced well below market so more people will try such a world-class wine
spain is back in the game in a big way with this deep ruby-red, nicely balanced wine that garnered a 90 point rating from robert parker. with aromas of violet, black cherry, pepper and tobacco and the full, ripe tastes of plum and black currants, this is a very special treat indeed. abadia retuerta’s vintner, angel anocibar-belloqui was named international wine maker of the year in 2005
the complex and intriguing aromas of this great aussie shiraz defy description, with always something new to discover, from dark fruits to an uplifting cinnamon spice. the palate is equally complex with plum, boysenberry and raspberry alongside more savory characters of grilled meat, black olive and dark chocolate, all leading to a long, nicely focused finish that has such a lingering, intoxicating effect that it's no surprise that the vintners chose this name
big, bold and beautiful, this is a succulent thunderbolt of pure shiraz where the rich fruit of mclaren vale and langhorne creek is given a spicy lift with the addition of grapes from strathbogie in central victoria. made with structure and grip, vibrant fruits linger with an enticing “gotta have more” finish. absolutely impossible to top this wine at this price
this stellar malbec from an emerging, limited production mendoza vineyard, has become an instant mingo favorite. with a deep, clean violet color, it is at once elegant and complex with a nose that combines raspberry and cassis with floral and spicy notes. it is rich and full on the palate, with flavorful hints of mellow mineral and soft smoke, all giving way to a lingering, fleshy finish don’t let the price fool you – this is a world-class wine that will never disappoint
argentina’s mendoza region has aptly been called “the next napa valley,” and the wines that are being produced there are living up to the billing. tamari is the region’s indigenous huarpe people’s word for “passion,” and this wine is passion personified, with its intense aromas of black cherry, plum and blackberry, tasty notes of cinnamon, and a hint of vanilla against a backdrop of toasty oak
ruby in color with new world aromas and medium intensity this mendoza malbec is not to be missed. dry on the palate with hints of juicy dark berries, smoke, wet earth and an intriguing hint of bacon, it has medium tannins, medium acidity and a medium finish, though there’s nothing medium about wine spectator’s 89-point rating
anyone with a taste for rich malbecs or robust riojas should dive into this lovely wine from the ribera del guadiana region. an intriguing purple color and a nose of ripe black cherry with hints of chocolate and spice carry through to a palate that encompasses deep dark fruits, savory cocoa and soft traces of pepper. with lush tannins and bright acidity, the finish is precise and focused
this terrific pinot has been getting spectacular press lately, and it’s very well deserved as it is an elegant, cool-climate pinot noir at its best. it is fragrant, soft and flavorful, with aromas of ripe cherries, plums and gentle sweet fruit tannins which provide serious structure and length
this outstanding syrah earned a 90-point rating from international wine cellar, and with it’s lush, deep, varietally accurate flavors of dark berries and smoked meat it is a mouthful of syrah at the price. from a nose of mulberry, licorice, wild herbs and chocolate to a broad finish of solid ripe tannins, this is a stellar wine at an unbeatable price
