Rich, full-bodied, and powerful, with a great mid-palate, it stays light on its feet and has a focused, pure texture, notable tannins, and a great finish. This is a head-turning, beautifully textured Ribera del Duero to enjoy over the coming decade or more. RP94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2018 Aalto reflects the cooler conditions of the year, with a more austere profile, subtle aromas and a harmonious palate. This is a classic example of modern, ripe and well-oaked Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, which this year feels creamy, juicy and balanced. This follows the path of 2017 with integrated oak (they used only around 20% new oak) and a lively palate in a more drinkable and approachable style. They added some new vineyards from the zone of Boada where the soils are red and the wines bring freshness and lots of fruit. The wine had a shorter maceration with the skins and a softer vinification. This is finer and more balanced, with finesse but still very much recognizable as Aalto. 300,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2020.

It’s always a delight to drink with nuanced oak, glossy tannins and ample blackberry and violet notes.

Winemaker Notes Deep ruby in color, this wine offers earthy aromas and notes of dark fruits and rosemary. RP92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2014 Quimera is a blend of different red grape varieties from old vines in different places in the province of Mendoza, Perdriel in Luján de Cuyo, Tupungato in Valle de Uco and Medrano in Maipú. It is a blend of 50% Malbec, 24% Cabernet Franc, 18% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine matures in French oak barrels (80% new) for 13 moths. It's a subtle, elegant and perfumed Mendoza blend. JS92 James Suckling Tight and refined with cool, fine tannins and a fresh flower and citrus undertone. Medium to full body and a bright finish. WE91 Wine Enthusiast Tarry, fiery aromas of berry fruits and oaky spice lead to an iron-fisted palate with rubbery tannins. This blend of Malbec, Cab Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot tastes of savory berry fruits and plum. The finish is spicy and delivers lushness and beefy weight. Drink through 2022.

Winemaker Notes Opaque red-black. Scarlet rim. The wine opens to an amalgam of minerals and unctuous super-ripe berries. On the palate the wine is deep, rich and ripe. Black fruits (cherries, plums) give way to hints of liquorice, molasses and a hint of cinnamon. Solid tannins and focused acidity with a long finish. Bodegas Alto Moncayo is a winery located in the Campo de Borja D.O. It was founded in 2002 with the aim of turning it into a world reference for Garnacha wines of the highest quality, crafted from some of the oldest native vine clones in the area.The garnacha grape is one of the varieties that best expresses its terroir. Thus, the Garnacha of Alto Moncayo is different from the rest of the Campo de Borja D.O area. This is due to the very strict selection made from the vineyards, the type of soil in which it is grown, the microclimate, and the age of the vines. Location of Vineyard Located in Borja- the heart of the Campo de Borja DO . Vines are planted at the foothills of El Moncayo which is the highest point in the Iberian Mountain Range (2,315 m) and the winery's namesake. The region experiences a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Vineyards are planted on very unique soils of red clay (indicative of being rich in iron) mixed with red slate, and because of the hillside location are shallow and nutrient-deficient. Winemaking Philosophy The Garnacha grapes of Alto Moncayo undergo very strict vineyard selection, from vines planted as far back as the early 1900's through the 1970's. Only the most perfectly mature clusters are selected and carried in small crates to prevent crushing, where they are further sorted and selected at triage tables. Wines undergo malolactic fermentation in both French & American oak, and aged in new barrels between anywhere from 16-24 months. These practices, in combination with the unique microclimate of the area ensure superior quality Garnacha that is distinct from any other in the Campo de Borja D.O.

Pèppoli 2019 is ruby red in color. On the nose, Pèppoli offers sweet notes of red fruit; cherries, sour cherries and lychees accompanied by floral scents of rose petals and spicy hints of sandalwood, rosemary and lavender. Its palate is soft with smooth, sweet tannins together with well-balanced freshness that make it easy to drink, lively and savory. JS92 James Suckling A medium-bodied Chianti Classico with cherry, redcurrant and some sliced orange. It’s linear and bright. Hints of earth and dried tea leaf. Drink now.

Winemaker Notes Tignanello 2018 is a deeply intense ruby red color. On the nose, it’s remarkably complex with notes of ripe red fruit, black cherries, sour cherries that merge with sweet hints of vanilla, mint anddelicate sensations of white pepper and myrtle. Its palate is rich and well balanced: supple velvety tannins are sustained by exceptional freshness that give the wine length, elegance and persistence of flavors. Blend: 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc RP98 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate This wine brought to mind precise imagery of tailcoats, striped dress pants, wingtip collar shirts and other gentlemen's fashion choices from the Roaring Twenties. Sporting a retro but classic personality, the Marchesi Antinori 2018 Tignanello is quite the dapper and jovial wine that hits the market just as much of the world is emerging from a dark chapter of lockdowns and coronavirus curfews. I love the optimism that springs bright with such clarity and detail from within this blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The 2016 vintage was a benchmark for sure, but I prefer the 2018, thanks to that tinge of nostalgia or emotion that is so deftly rendered in this cool, long growing season. JS 96James Suckling This is so aromatic with flowers, such as cherry blossoms and roses, together with currants and blackberries. A medium-bodied Tignanello with very fine tannins and depth. Racy and very, very long finish. Pure and refined. Lots of blue fruit. Tight at the end, but showing a sophisticated and reserved style. Very refined. Drinkable now, but will age nicely.

Winemaker Notes A plum purple color with crimson highlights, Lot 4 opens with a serious nose - underlying dark fruits are overlaid with soft leather, cassis, unsweetened chocolate and the subtle scent of smoke drifting from an open grill. Entry on the palate features intense but elegantly smooth tannins, which then recede as ripe berries grab attention. Hints of vanilla and blueberry playfully mingle, leading into a long, dry finish that returns to a serious note, with tannins that are luxuriously fine. More than 40 years after he and his parents founded Caymus Vineyards, Chuck Wagner undertook a new project: creating a Cabernet Sauvignon from a broader stretch of California farmland. He was guided by the memory of enjoying family meals, always accompanied by a good glass of wine. Chuck wanted to create delicious Cabernet that would be more widely accessible, made from places worthy of exploration and discovery. And so, Bonanza Cabernet Sauvignon was born, celebrating the “bonanza” or fortune to be found in our great state. As Chuck puts it, “We are proud to be making this multi-vintage California-appellation Cabernet Sauvignon. Do you have any idea how much fun this is for a seasoned winemaker?” Bonanza calls back to a simpler time, and Chuck’s hope is that it will invite people to enjoy good wine as a simple pleasure of everyday life.

Winemaker Notes The color is deep red with violet hues. It has aromas of ripe red and black fruit mixed with spicy notes of vanilla, clove, cinnamon, and cigar box. Hints of confectionery. Concentrated palate with sweet tannins and a velvety texture. It is beautifully balanced with a persistent finish. JS93 James Suckling So much blue fruit and dried violets on the nose. Subtle. Medium-bodied with fine tannins that have a dusty feel to them. Pretty, fine tannins. Supple. Nice to drink now.

Winemaker Notes This vibrant wine is a pale straw color with green highlights. The zesty aromas jump from the glass, with highlights of pink grapefruit, citrus, and gooseberry. On the palate, flavors of passionfruit, blood orange, and fresh citrus. The resulting wine is beautifully balanced, with ripe fruit sweetness and tight fresh acidity this wine leaves you with mouth-watering sensations.

Winemaker Notes The nose is rich in aromas and pronounced in intensity. There is striking ripe red fruit, later we get the wood nuances with gently sweet notes of vanilla to finish with other sweet spices. On the palate it is perfumed, soft and fresh with a long finish that leaves memories of red fruit, vanilla and cocoa. Perfect with pasta, poultry and fresh light cheeses, grilled chicken, small bites (light cheese, grilled vegetables). WS89 Wine Spectator This plump red offers black cherry, red plum, licorice and leafy flavors, with light tannins and citrusy acidity. Fresh,juicy and clean. Drink now through 2026.

Winemaker Notes Catena Alta is an assemblage of historic rows within the Catena family Estate vineyards. The blend of these historic rows, like the marriage of sounds that create a symphony, yields a highly aromatic and elegant wine that speaks for the earth and the vines that have been tended by the Catenas for four generations. The Catena Alta wines can usually be drunk starting at three years after harvest and into the following one to two decades. RP93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2018 Catena Alta Malbec shows more evolution and ripeness than the 2019. It's varietal and floral with a mixture of red and black fruit, sweet spices and aromatic herbs. It has moderate ripeness—in fact, it's a little lower in alcohol than the 2019—a medium body and fine-grained tannins, with good grip. 162,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2019.

Winemaker Notes The Catena Cabernet Sauvignon shows a dark ruby color with violet tones. On the nose, it offers intense aromas of ripe raspberries and cassis with notes of pepper, clove, and a touch of cedar. On the palate, it is full-bodied and rich and displays layers of black currant and black raspberry with notes of cedar and oregano. This Cabernet Sauvignon is an elegant wine with silky tannins that provide structure and a long and persistent finish. Winemaker Notes 20% whole cluster and 80% whole berry fruit is hand- loaded into 225-500 liter new French oak barrels for a 100% barrel fermentation for a period of 30 days, allowing seamless oak integration. The fermentation temperature is kept low, extracting intense aromas, and the cap management is done by hand to ensure soft, gentle flavors and tannin extraction. Wild yeasts. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in barrel leaves considerable lees and sediment. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 18 months. JS97 James Suckling Lots of blackberry and blueberry aromas with licorice, too. Extremely aromatic. Full-bodied, layered and deep. Superb richness and balance, at the same time. Really great. RP95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2017 Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino mixes grapes from 60% Altamira (Nicasia) and Lunlunta and shows a little riper than the pure Altamira from Nicasia vineyard. There is a note of raspberry that gives brightness to the aromas, and the palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a fluid sensation that is quite remarkable for 2017. WS94 Wine Spectator Elegant, fine-textured flavors of red fruit and red berry are backed by suave, medium-grained tannins. Silky midpalate, with a long, mineral-filled finish that features lively sanguine and light savory accents. Drink now through 2026.

WW93 Wilfred Wong COMMENTARY: The just-released 2019 Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet could be the 49th vintage of this iconic brand I have tasted (I'll have to check my notes, I may have missed one or two)—my favorites have been the 1972 and 1973 vintages. Over the last two decades, the wines have amused me as they have taken intriguing turns in the road. The 2019 vintage, the winery's best in recent times, is exciting and profound. TASTING NOTES: This wine shows up with the lasting power of black fruit and licorice. Its layers of persistent and formidable fruit could turn a semi-vegetarian into a carnivore. (Tasted: January 29, 2021, San Francisco, CA) WS92 Wine Spectator A rich, showy style, with a very creamy texture to its mix of warmed vanilla, plum and boysenberry puree, and melted black licorice flavors. A mocha notes swirls around the fruit on the finish. Drink now through 2028.

Red Schooner by Caymus Voyage 10 Malbec Grapes for this Malbec are grown in the Andes Mountains of Argentina, then chilled and transported by ocean voyage to Caymus, where we use our winemaking techniques to create a style that is dense, dark and supple. Falling outside standard labeling rules, Red Schooner does not include a vintage date but is known by the voyage from which it traveled (Voyage 10 is the 2020 vintage). Strikingly smooth, with scents and flavors of dark fruit and fine, textural tannins.

Winemaker Notes A regal maroon rimmed with purple, the 2018 vintage features rich, enveloping scents of French plums and German chocolate cake. A hint of pomace, vanilla, and floral potpourri adds freshness to the nose, while the wood on this wine cradles but never defines the fruit. On the palate, dark berry flavors mingle with tannins, each expanding again and again to march the other. An initial softness builds, evolving on the finish to the texture of blackberry preserves or the filling of a fig bar, creamy and luxurious. WW91 Wilfred Wong of Wine.com COMMENTARY: Why doesn't the world love Durif? Perhaps it is because the grape variety is barely known (except "geeks" in the wine biz). The 2018 Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif is powerful and lasting on the palate. TASTING NOTES: This wine is not shy as it surrounds the palate with ripe, grapey fruits and wood. Chateau Barreyres shows a sumptuous deep purple color. The nose opens with appealing aromas of fresh red fruit alongside classic features associated with well-managed aging. This is a fine, elegant Cru Bourgeois with a very pleasing profile, including good structure and a full body. The finish is remarkably persistent. JS91 James Suckling Dried red flowers and red currants, cherries and an edge of graphite, too. This has plushness and fluidity on the palate with a fine, even-paced finish. Try from 2021.

Winemaker Notes The robe is frank with blue-toned colors. The nose unveils burlat cherry and fig aromas with spices such as nutmeg, with cocoa and morello cherry eau de vie notes. The palate carries silky tannins. A freshness in the mouth, combined with complex red fruits, gentle spices and smoky notes. WE 94Wine Enthusiast Initial notes of dried garrigue and crushed earth open into rich, ripe blackberry and black plum on the nose of this elegant red. A blend of 80% Grenache supplemented by Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault, it’s a gripping, intensely black-fruited wine, with a firm mineral undertone. The palate is concentrated and mouthwatering, with juicy stone fruit and subtle tropical characters underpinned by a fine minerality and meyer lemon acidity. Enjoy with keta salmon maki and asparagus with balsamic vinaigrette. Critical Acclaim WS93 Wine Spectator Vibrant and intense, this offers a mouthwatering mix of lemon meringue, ruby grapefruit, lime sherbet and dried pineapple notes that leap out of the glass with equally intense aromatics. Hints of lemon verbena and dried ginger linger on the finish. Drink now. JS92 James Suckling A fresh, creamy-textured white with lots of freshness and lovely pear and green-apple character. Some white pineapple. It’s medium-bodied with crisp acidity and a flavorful finish. Less herbs and more clean, ripe fruit. D92Decanter It would be easy for Cloudy Bay to rest on its laurels, such is its renown, but you can't argue with the quality (even if you might at the price). The sweet, juicy pink grapefruit, guava and passion fruit notes are elegant, not in your face, and balanced well by brisk acidity. Delicious! V91 Vinous Delightfully textured and smooth with balanced yet mouthwatering acidity, this wine veers into the green hedgerow spectrum of Sauvignon; think nettles and elderflowers rather than flamboyant tropical fruits. That said, there's a subtle flavor of passion fruit running through this wine. Midweight with some decent concentration, it offers nice grip on the medium-plus-length finish. Don't chill the hell out of this or you'll miss the best bits. I've given a drinking window of 2020–2025 but having tasted a delightful 14-year-old Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc that tastes like a mature Sémillon, I can say that you’re not in any danger if you leave it longer. It’s a delicious and supple wine, all about sharing and conviviality, perfectly pairing with meat dishes in sauce or grilled meats. Its aromas make this Châteauneuf-du-Pape to tasters ranging from beginners to the most connoisseurs. In its youth, a deep crimson, ripe dark fruit, turning to spices. Smooth and persistent with aromatic fullness. This wine can be ageing as an old vintage. Its spicy ripe fruit aromas then turn to prune, licorice and black pepper compotes. WS93 Wine Spectator Ripe, sleek and captivating for its bright and forward display of cassis, cherry paste and boysenberry compote flavors. The finish is lined with red licorice and mulling spice accents, featuring a flash of roasted apple wood. This is for fans of the modern style. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Carignan, Counoise, Terret, Picpoul, Muscardin, Picardan, Bourboulenc, Clairette and Roussanne. Drink now through 2034. Winemaker Notes PSI is the 23rd letter in the Greek alphabet and is the name of Peter Sisseck's (of the coveted Pingus and Flor de Pingus) utopian wine from Ribera del Duero. Peter has sought out the best independent vineyard growers in Ribera and is incentivizing them to improve viticultural practices and shun chemicals, lower yields and practice biodynamics by paying them increasingly for the fruit as they improve. The result is a "give back" to the region wine that also expresses the "soul" of Ribera. JS94 James Suckling Blackberry and black-cherry aromas with lavender, cedar and hints of cloves and white pepper, following through to a medium body with ultra-fine tannins and a beautiful, creamy finish. A little tight and reserved now. Another impressive PSI. Give it until 2022. RP93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2019 PSI combines their knowledge of the vineyards and their new winery. They learned a lot in 2018, a more heterogeneous vintage, and their sorting machine for grapes had to work a lot. 2019 was more homogeneous, an easier harvest when most people made better wine. In the winery, they invested in a simple building but top technology. They used some 10% Garnacha in the blend, which was done one year after aging the lots separately. It really reminds me of the young wines from Ribera del Duero from the early 1990s, with some aromas of orange peel, earthy and smoky (very mild) and with fine-grained tannins. It has good ripeness at 14% alcohol and integrated acidity but great balance. It showcases the style of the 2019s here, fresher than expected and still a sunny vintage, when 2018 was more crystalline. A triumph over the natural conditions of the year. Rating: 93+

It's still bright and primary, with cherry fruit seeming a bit one-dimensional at this stage, although there's a welcome hint of almond paste on the crisp finish. Range: 89-91 WE90 Wine Enthusiast Baked apple, cardamom and smoke introduce this fullbodied, lusciously waxen white. It’s a rippling, textural wine that finishes on an elegantly salty tang.

Winemaker Notes This Cabernet Franc is ruby red in color with soft violet tones. The nose has intense aromas and concentrated notes of cassis, ripe currants, and sweet spices including black pepper and cloves. His tenure provides integrated oak notes of cedar and vanilla. Fresh impact and excellent structure on the palate, reminiscent of ripe red fruits with hints of eucalyptus and tagged black pepper. This wine has an excellent balance and elegance with a well-structured, persistent finish. Pair this Cabernet Franc with grilled game meats. Critical Acclaim RP93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The expressive and elegant 2017 El Enemigo Cabernet Franc has some 8% Malbec in the blend. It's a subtle red with nuance and detail, very harmonious, aromatic, even floral within the spicy character of the variety. The palate is medium-bodied, the tannins are very fine and there's moderate alcohol and very good freshness and harmony. This matured in oak foudres for some 15 months. JS93 James Suckling This is such a delicious cabernet franc with blackberry and floral notes on the nose and palate, which draw you in and invite you to drink. Medium body. Round, creamy tannins and a delicious finish. The use of whole berries really makes this. WE92 Wine Enthusiast Tight, spicy aromas of rooty berry fruits brightened by red currant set up a smooth, jammy palate that doesn't weigh too heavily. Peppery black fruit flavors are topped by toasty oak, while this expands on the finish with berry, spice and chocolate notes, with herbal hints coming in late Drink through 2024.

Winemaker Notes Alejandro Vigil is a master of Chardonnay, as well as a man who likes to push boundaries, which is why this impressive white was made with a little flor, just like a Fino Sherry. Toasty, spicy and salty, this is briney and refreshing with some honeyed notes. JS97 James Suckling This is another rock-star chardonnay from here with dried-apple, pear-skin, crushed-stone and peach-pit character. Full body. Creamy texture. Phenolic form and a long, flavorful finish. RP93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The textbook 2018 El Enemigo Chardonnay had varietal aromas and notes from the barrel, giving it a very attractive profile. But there is a secret: the barrels develop some flor yeasts in the style of Jerez (or Jura) and this gives the wine a spicy twist, hints of curry and white pepper. The wine is silky and the very high acidity is not noticeable. This is a great commercial success, and at the price, it offers great value.

A joint venture between Adrianna Catena, daughter of Nicolas Catena, and Alejandro Vigil, Chief Winemaker at Bodega Catena Zapata, El Enemigo Malbec is produced at Piedemonte al Sur, located in the southern foothills of Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza. The facility is named for the unique aspect of Mendoza's high altitude winemaking region nestled in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. Tasting Notes Rich and concentrated, it offers aromas of black fruit, cherry and dark berryfruit on the nose followed in the palate by a full-bodied wine with flavors of spice, blackberry, black cherry, pepper and a slight floral character. The finish is elegant and lengthy. 92pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2017 El Enemigo Malbec has 10% Cabernet Franc and fermented with 50% full clusters and indigenous yeasts, then matured in oak foudres for 15 months. The oak is perfectly integrated into the fruit, and the wine comes through as floral and fruit-driven, elegant, with moderate ripeness, focused and clean flavors and very round tannins. It's long and tasty. Rating: 92+ 92pts James Suckling Love the blackberry, flower and orange-peel character. Medium body, creamy tannins and a flavorful finish. This is real malbec. Total whole-berry fermentation gives this freshness and brightness. Tension to the very friendly fruit at the end. 91pts Wine & Spirits Adrianna Catena joined forces with Alejandro Vigil, the head winemaker at Catena Zapata, to create this label in 2009. Their goal was to meld modern winemaking techniques with older traditions, like fermenting with ambient yeasts in cement tanks, as they did for a portion of this wine. The brightness and verve of the blend lasts past the smoke of the oak and brings a sense of freshness to the blackberry flavors. It’s modern but balanced, especially if there’s a double-cut pork chop on hand.

Winemaker Notes Dark ruby red in color, this wine opens up with aromas of dark cherry, persimmon, dark chocolate, and sweet pipe tobacco. The palate is rich, robust, and well-balanced, with solid structure and intense flavors of bing cherry, cocoa, candied cranberry, and boysenberry. Winemaker Notes With a very covered cherry red color, this wine perfectly represents the typical concentration of the 2018 vintage: an intense, mature aroma, endowed with good intensity and great personality. The low production has achieved a clear balance between maturity and freshness, with a clear complexity provided by its months in the barrel. On the palate it is powerful and structured with good balance and a long and persistent mid palate. RP93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2018 Malleolus showed very well. It's a juicy, ripe and generous old-vine Tempranillo fermented with their own strain of yeasts and matured in French oak barrels. It showcases the house style—ripe and, in this case, with neatly integrated but generous oak. The palate is medium to full-bodied, and the tannins are fine. There is good freshness in 2018. It was bottled in May 2020.

Winemaker Notes Elegant and subtle, a low production volume which has brought out the best essences of the grape. It’s a powerful, balanced wine with exceptional elegance. The aromas of Tempranillo have been refined through the ageing process and it has notes of wood in the background and the personality of the variety. Here, the wines are selected by vine age, and this comes from vines that are between 15 and 25 years of age. The oak is there but in synchrony with the fruit.

El Gran Enemigo SV Gualtallary shows a deep purple color with red highlights. Its aromas are intense and elegant. Cabernet Franc brings sweet spices, black pepper and light notes of eucalyptus and thyme. Malbec brings notes of ripe black fruits, blackberries and black cherries. The oak aging gives a touch of chocolate and vanilla to blend. The taste is complex, sweet impact with structured tannins, and a very long and persistent finish. This wine was made in honor of the old Pomerol style where Cabernet Franc was blended with the other Bordeaux varieties. This wine is excellent with grilled meats and various cheeses. Blend: 85% Cabernet Franc, 15% Malbec Critical Acclaim RP99 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The nose of the 2016 Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Single Vineyard transported me back to the classical wines from the Bordeaux of yesteryear, with austerity and with no room for sweetness or creamy texture. This is about chalk and umami, salty and tasty, with the clout and wilderness of Gualtallary; its electric freshness and fine tannins; the expression of Cabernet Franc (with some Merlot) in the poor, stony and limestone-rich soils from the high-altitude vineyards; and the intensity this altitude provides, as there is a strong impact from the light in the grapes. But the one thing that I liked the most about this 2016 was its balance and the way it feels light but has tremendous concentration and power, light on its feet with masses of inner strength. It's nuanced and complex, even if it's terribly young. With time in the glass, it developed notes of orange peel that spoke of freshness, and the palate is sharp and direct, with symmetry and precision. This is approachable now but should live forever in bottle. JS96 James Suckling The blue fruit, crushed chalk and stone are so exciting here, as always. Full-bodied with fresh fruit and fine, vertical tannin texture going through the center palate. Softness and balance throughout. So drinkable now, but will improve with age. D93 Decanter Alejandro Vigil has made Cabernet Franc from four different vineyards in the Uco Valley, and this one from the Los Chacayes GI has turned out to be the most wild and original of the quartet. A deep violet in colour, the floral nose offers a decent amount of red fruit, berries and spice from an ageing process that managed to tame the natural power of the terroir. Velvety in the mouth with juicy acidity and chalky tannins, this is a red for daring palates.

Winemaker Notes Grayson Chardonnay is brilliantly ripe and shows bright, brisk acidity and good minerality with notes of pineapple and apricot. The palate offers green apple fruit with a crisp finish showing gentle hints of apple pie and vanilla flavors. Brilliant red in the glass. A light roasted aroma complemented by fresh berries. Savory notes of earth and black tea balanced with a rich core of black fruits. Round tannins, good acidity. The Monastrell vineyards used to produce this wine are situated at an elevation of 2,800 feet above sea level with an average vine age of 55 years. They are situated on chalky and sandy hillside soils with excellent drainage, allowing them to ripen in optimal conditions. The production does not exceed one ton per acre. The Cabernet and Syrah vineyards are located at 2,300 feet above sea level with an average vine age of 15 years. The fermentation is carried out separately in small open tank fermenters. The wine is then aged for 18 months in new French and American oak barrels. Blend: 60% Monastrell, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon & 10% Syrah Dry-farmed, no pesticides or herbicides, hand-harvested, Vegan. RP 92Robert Parker's Wine Advocate I also tasted the 2019 Juan Gil (blue label), the wine formerly known as 18 Months, the time it spends in barrel. They use 100% new oak that is a mixture of French and American. The wine is ripe, oaky and heady (15.5% alcohol), but I felt a change in the oak, which seemed more integrated. When I asked Miguel Gil, he told me they had changed the toast, using less toasted barrels, from medium+ to medium, and that shows in the wine. They still believe this wine should have new oak to give it aging potential. They have also introduced optical sorting of the grapes and eliminate the raisins (by shape) and the unripe grains (by color), and that adds precision and cleanliness. 30,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in June 2021. Rating: 92+

Winemaker Notes Aromas of lemon, pineapple and nectarine are supported on the nose by subtle hints of Brioche, spice and oak and flavors of pear, tangerine and honeydew melon. Heady flavors of apple galette add a vein of richness. The texture is fleshy, vibrant and concentrated with juicy, yet balanced, acidity and a lingering finish.

Intense finish, with persistent hints of strawberry jam, cocoa and vanilla and a seductive final acidity that entices you to carry on drinking. V92 Vinous Glistening ruby-red. Spice-tinged red fruit and floral aromas pick up hints of coconut and succulent herbs with air. Silky and expressive on the palate, offering appealingly sweet cherry and raspberry flavors and a spicecake nuance that builds steadily in the glass. Closes long and smooth, with repeating florality and subtle tannins that come in late.

Garnet red, medium-high depth, with an elegant palate. The nose stands out for its power, a highly-complex blend of spicy and balsamic aromas of sweet licorice, patisserie, vanilla, cinnamon, cocoa, coffee and nutmeg, and notes of stewed red fruits. Outstanding balance, pleasant freshness and great structure in the mouth, with supple, round tannins. Very pleasant mouthfeel. An ample aftertaste of spicy notes, sweet licorice and ripe fruit makes this a timeless wine, with tremendous laying-down potential. Pair with roast lamb, red meats, barbeques, large game, spicy fish casseroles and smoked and aged cheeses. This is the wine that invites you to experience each moment in blue, making the most of your time so you can sparkle with your own light Mar de Frades is a varietal white Albariño produced in the Rías Baixas by the winery of the same name, Mar de Frades. The grapes used to make this Albariño come from Valiñas Finca, a plot planted on terraces and located to the south of Mount Valiñas in the Salnés Valley. The influence of the nearby Ria de Arousa is noted, and ocean breezes give this Mar de Frades a saline character. The vines are over 20 years of age, trellises are used to avoid soil moisture. A poor and shallow soil containing sand formed by decomposition of granite gives the wine a certain minerality. The harvest is done manually and grapes goes through a strict table selection process, where up to 20-25% of the crop is discarded. The grapes are macerated for between 10 and 20 hours, after a light pressing a clean and very aromatic wine is obtained. Fermentation takes place at slow controlled temperatures. There was a change in the winery in 2016 that was finalized in 2018 with the new winery. The wine is textured and fine, and it's more elegant than the 2015 I tasted next to it. The detail and texture on the palate is different, and the quality of the tannins is completely different. Magnificent fruit integrity and natural concentration on the nose, still with clear primary notes. Precise tannins, freshness and unctuous feel. 93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2019 was a mild and dry year with 20% less rain than 2018. The 2019 Mauro was selected from their 90 hectares of organically farmed vineyards and fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. It is mostly Tempranillo with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah that adds freshness and floral aromas. It's a lighter and more approachable vintage than 2018, a more immediate wine, more approachable but in a way less complex.

Whatever one may think about the movie star connection, there's no denying the technical expertise the Perrin family brings to the project, with this vintage offering up attractive notions of red berries, tangerine, peach and melon, all layered on a base of crushed stone. The Languedoc climatic conditions allow a perfect maturation for the grapes which are moderated by the humid influence of the Mediterranean. Vineyard Mont Gravet Rosé comes from specially selected Cinsault vineyards in the Languedoc region, located near the warm Mediter- ranean shoreline in Southern France. The Cinsault variety is also one of the main varietals used in the production of Provence rosé and some of the best reds of the Southern Rhone Valley. Winemaking Harvested at night the grapes when it is coolest, the grapes undergo a modern winemaking process of 100% direct pressing with temperature carefully controlled and monitored through-out the entire production process. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. Alcohol: 11.75% Tasting Notes Mont Gravet Rosé is a wonderfully fresh and fruit forward dry Rosé wine. The wine has lovely aromas of raspberry and blackberry and is full body and long on the palate. Food Match This Rosé is a wonderful “anytime” wine and a delicious aperitif. It has a varietal and clean nose mixing notes of violets and wild berries and herbs with very integrated oak. The palate is medium to full-bodied with juicy fruit and a tasty, almost salty finish.

As is the norm here, it fermented in oak vats and matured in barrels, in this case for 24 months, crafted by their own coopers. The wine is fined with egg whites and kept in bottle for a further 12 months before it's released. I had the wine in the glass for a very long time, and it didn't stop improving; it started a little lactic and creamy, and then it got more and more serious. This is the only red they produced this vintage, so all the best grapes that normally go to other wines were used here; those selected grapes helped to keep the volume of this cuvée, and at the same time, it seems to have boosted the quality of this wine, which feels every bit as good as the 2016. It has a serious palate with fine, chalky tannins and very good balance. This is a textbook Muga red and a triumph over the conditions of the year, elegant and balanced, approachable now and with potential to age.

In 2017, they sourced Cabernet Sauvignon from Altamira and Gualtallary, and it fermented together with the juice of the Cabernet Franc. It has a touch of ripeness in the nose but without excess; it's balsamic, with the Cabernet dominating the aromatics. The palate comes through as really balanced and perhaps a little lighter. It has very fine tannins and a clean, focused finish. 78,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2018. Winemaker Notes Nicolás Catena Zapata has an intense, deep purple color with bluish-black tones. On the nose, aromas of black fruits – blackberries, black cherries, black plums – predominate with subtle notes of vanilla and dark chocolate intermingled with savory hints of green olive and a stony minerality. On the palate, the wine is tremendously complex, unfolding layer upon layer of red currant, eucalyptus, and black pepper flavors. Winemaker Notes Ruby red with purple reflections, Le Volte dell’ Ornellaia 2020 has a vinous bouquet, releasing a complexity of aromas ranging from ripe red fruits, to Mediterranean scrub, up to delicate notes of tobacco and spices. The mouthfeel is soft and silky, but at the same time supported by a lively acidity that gives us a crisp, persistent finish. D93 Decanter Bright and young on the nose, smells like freshly-picked red cherries, almost like sweets, blackcurrant and cherry sweets braced by bramble fruits and soft perfume. Softly creamy and chalky on the palate, strawberries and red cherries have a chalky texture and quite a perfume to the flavor profile. There is a generous display of cherry, cassis and wild plum. On second nose, this easy and straightforward Tuscan blend reveals hints of spice, cardamon and polished river stone. In a hot vintage like this, the wine comes together nicely and rather effortlessly.
