Plzen in the Czech Republic was literally born to make beer. When King Wenceslas II of Bohemia founded the city in 1295, he granted its 260 households the right to make beer. For hundreds of years, this worked great. Yet as might be expect with this many home brewers, quality varied over time. It was easy to get beer but not so easy to get good beer. In 1838, several of the more enthusiastic brewers in town declared 36 barrels undrinkable and dumped them out in front of the town hall. This drove the brewing households to join forces and collectively build a brewery -- The Citizens Brewery of Plzen. The idea was to create a state of the art brewery to put in place a series of new beer making practices that were making their way across central Europe, such as the production of pale malt. Under the main building they dug a network of ice-cooled tunnels for another new technique called laagering (from the German 'lager'- to store). Four years later they revealed a golden clear, crisp, light-bodied beer that blew the doors off the dark and cloudy beers of the time. Lovingly named after the brewery's address in Everett, The 87 is a tremendously hopped New England DIPA. It pours hazy and glowing orange. A simple, clean malt bill allows its tropical bouquet of hops to shine bright. It sips smooth, with huge notes of nectarine and tangerine. Medium hop bitterness balances a hint of sweetness from the malts.

This is the stout that made Guinness famous. Sought after by beer aficionados for its mix of hop bitterness, dark malty flavor, crisp roasty notes and bittersweet finish, Extra Stout is perhaps the definitive version of an Irish dry stout. For this first release in our musically-inspired Hazy IPA series, we involved fan participation. While making our 2021 playlist last year, we solicited suggestions on social media. The song "Be More Kind" by Frank Turner won our hearts, a place on the list, and the first beer of the 2021 series. Be a Beacon is brewed with Citra and Mosaic hops.

This double IPA features Talus, Simcoe, and citra hops in the recipe. Zesty, and dynamic it has the bold hop flavor you love, while delicate aromas of orange peel dance on the nose. A subtle malt backbone balances out the flavor profile and allows the hop character to shine. Silky on the palate, this beer drinks surprisingly smooth despite it’s ABV.

An easy drinking, aromatic, and fruity session New England IPA. El Dorado and Azacca hops give flavors of orchard fruit, mango, pineapple and citrus. Smooth, creamy body from the use of oats and wheat in the grist. Late and dry hopping to provide sustained, enjoyable hop aromatics. It has all the enjoyable qualities of a NEIPA, but with less alcohol to make it sessionable.
