The result is a menagerie of musical styles - from the heavy rock and funk arrangements of songs like "hitman" to the stripped-down folk of "water". In 2011, the band released their first full length album "cut the brakes", and had the track "water" featured in the closing scene of the afi-fest award-winning film the hammer, which told the true story of deaf ufc fighter matt hamill. The album's rock and folk arrangements have garnered comparisons to artists like jack johnson and bruce springsteen, and have received regular rotation on shows like scott regan's "open tunings" (npr). The band's love of all music and their ability to write and play across numerous mediums makes for a unique concert experience. Nick finzer is one of the hottest young jazz musicians on the scene in new york city today. The award-winning juilliard-trained trombonist and composer draws from the past as he reaches out to the millennials of his generation hungry for new expressions. His current project, âthe chase,â will be his second album of original compositions recorded by one of the hottest quintets of young jazz musicians working the new york city scene. Finzer toured with both the jazz at lincoln center orchestra featuring wynton marsalis, and on the north american/european tour of the internet phenomenon postmodern jukebox in 2014, and prepared his second album, âthe chase,â set to be released in July, 2015 on origin records. In January of 2013 he released âexposition,ââ ten original compositions for his debut album on the outside in music label. Nick was selected as a recipient of both a 2013 & 2015 ascap young jazz composers award for his compositions âalternate agendaâ and âthe rampâ, which both appear on the album. Modern master trombonist wycliffe gordon called finzer âa new voice to the pantheon of upcoming trombone greats in the making,â and called the album âa glowing example of things to come. Great compositions, playing, and overall leadership of the bandâ¦. The whole package.â Gordon should know. After taking part in the âessentially ellingtonâ competition finzer came under the tutelage of the former jazz at lincoln center trombonist, a relationship that developed into a four year commission project in which gordon wrote four pieces to feature nick during his undergraduate studies at the eastman school of music, where nick performed and studied with tommy dorsey orchestra, walt weiskopf, john clayton and slide hampton, among others. In 2011 nick was the winner of the eastern trombone workshopâTMs national jazz trombone competition and was a finalist in the 2010 international trombone associationâTMs carl fontana jazz trombone competition. Finzer studied under jazz trombone innovator, steve turre at juilliard jazz, working with many mentors including frank kimbrough, carl allen, and ray drummond. He completed a masters degree from juilliard. In new york, he has shared the stage with the likes of frank wess at dizzyâTMs club coca cola, lew tabackin and terrell stafford at the blue note, and lewis nash and ryan truesdellâTMs gil evans project at jazz standard. Nick continues to lead his own bands around the city and across the country. Finzer is determined to continually develop his artistry from the lineage of the music, while being honest to his musical voice and personality. Http://www.nickfinzermusic.com
